Meghalaya seek to increase cultivation area for Boro rice

Meghalaya State Rice Mission is seeking assistance from North Eastern Space Applications Centre to use space technology like remote sensing and geographical information systems to find suitable arable land for boro rice. It is a special type of rice cultivation practiced in north eastern area where rice is cultivated on residual or stored water in low lying areas after winter. Over recent years, the demand for the rice is increasing while cultivation is not meeting the surging demand. Department of Agriculture is expecting to increase the cultivation area and productivity from 2.72 metric tonnes per hectare
